Flint scouting helps Cassie Tanner fight off a Paiute Indian attack. She asks to join the wagon train as she is headed for California where the men are. She is an older crusty woman dressed as a man that everyone mistakes for a man. After joining the train it becomes clear that she has her eyes on Major Adams as her "man" while she rebuffs any attempts by Charlie to talk to her. This becomes a major nuisance to Adams but a comical delight to the others. As the problem escalates, they decide to see if Clee might be an option but Clee is ahead of them with his eye on her. They are on the edge of the main desert where they will be out of Paiute territory but they need fresh horses. Flint tries to get through but is wounded and returns to the train. Cassie tells them she is the one to go as she knows how to trade horses and Adams must stay with the train. Her and Clee with several men go after the horses but return to find the train under a major Indian attack. Written by Anonymous

The Adams wagon train is waiting for the Tucker, Bernard, and Gantry families to cross the desert to join them. The small group of three wagons loses their scout and leader to a rattlesnake bite. He has left them with maps but there are two routes. One is shorter but Mr. Tucker believes it to be the worst way to go versus Bernard who disagrees. Bernard was a Sergeant under Tucker in the Army. Bernard is tired of taking orders and wants to lead but Tucker destroys their rifles and takes their water to force them to follow him. Tucker and his wife Sabrina together provide the leadership and will power to continue. Water runs low, wagons break down, horses die, and Mrs. Bernard mental stability weakens. The biggest and strongest, Gantry's son, dies further straining relations. With the loss of a horse they chop the three wagons down to two two wheeled carts that they are forced to abandon later when the water is exhausted. Mr. Tucker goes ahead hoping to reach the Adams train for help while the others struggle along eventually stopping at a spot marked by Tucker. Even Tucker collapses as Hawks and Flint spot him in the desert. Written by Anonymous

Flint, Hawks and Wooster are leading a small group of wagons split off the main train to the Dakotas. A massive rain storm floods a river crossing. The options are to turn around or cross Sioux burial grounds hoping to make it through before the rain ends and the Sioux are out. Samuel Bleymier is a believer in signs and omens. He keeps his daughter Belle on a short leash. He says the signs indicate they should turn back. Flint takes a vote with Justin Claiborne casting the deciding vote to cross the Sioux grounds. Bleymier's wagon breaks a wheel after being stuck in a mud hole. He and Hawks with another man stay to fix the wheel while the rest go on. Belle rides with Wooster and a relationship has developed between her and Justin with plans to marry. When the rain clears, Justin decides to go on horseback to find her father's wagon. The wagon is destroyed by the Sioux but Hawks and Bleymier are alive. Hawks uses the horse to warn the others while Justin and Bleymier go on foot. Hawks warns the others but Belle takes Justin's wagon to look for him. She finds them but Bleymier shoots Belle hoping to kill Justin. He steals the wagon while Justin carries Belle back as a tornado hits. Bleymier's reading of the signs fail him in the tornado. Written by Anonymous

But what of the women? Plucked from their homes, their hearths, their friends, everything familiar and secure. How will they survive this unforgiving land? "The women make up the strength of this train." So says Flint McCullough. Which of the women will endure, and which will the prairie conquer? There's Mrs. Clara Reynolds from Philadelphia; Mrs. Sally Miller, young newlywed bride; Mrs. Charity Kirby, Gloucester woman who refused to leave her piano behind; and finally, Grandma Bates, seasoned veteran of the prairie crossing from her youth, on her way back to California. Description ▼
The wagon train learns Buffalo Horn has returned with nearly a hundred braves and is on the warpath. On his way to Fort David to request a military escort for the wagon train, scout Duke Shannon discovers two dead cavalry troopers killed by Indians. As he investigates, he discovers a third man, a prisoner, Sergeant Johnny Masters. Sgt. Masters attempts to steal Shannon's horse. Shannon catches Masters, and with an Indian war party bearing down on them makes a run for Fort David. There Shannon discovers the fort is manned by a mere handful of cavalry misfits. The main body of the fort's contingent is out on patrol. With the fort commander laid up with a bullet wound, the most capable soldier in the fort is Sgt. Masters, who refuses to help with the defense and is locked up. As Shannon helps organize the defense of the fort against the coming attack by Buffalo Horn, he learns more about Sgt. Masters. A Cherokee Indian by birth, Sgt. Masters served in the Civil War where he was promoted to First Lieutenant by act of Congress, a commission he held for only a year. Caught between two worlds, the world of his birth and the world of the white man, Sgt. Masters was now serving a twenty year sentence for killing an army captain in a fight over the fort commander's daughter. Or so Shannon is told. As the fort's situation grows more desperate, circumstances force more of Sgt. Johnny Masters' secrets into the light. Written by Christopher D.
